Beautiful Cenotes

Beautiful but full of mystery and magic at the same time, cenotes are the prettiest jewels of the Yucatan Peninsula. You can swim in crisp mineral-rich waters in magical caves or under a jungle-framed sky and feel lost in another time, which can’t be miss during your vacation in Cancun.

Cenotes are natural swimming holes formed by the collapse of porous limestone bedrock, which reveals a secret subterranean world of groundwater pools. The Mayans revered cenotes because they were a source of water in dry times; indeed, the name cenote means ‘sacred well’.

There are over 6,000 cenotes in Mexico. The best cenotes in Mexico are located in the Yucatan. The color of the water can vary from emerald greens to intense blues, and it so very clean.

Mayan importance

  • Ancient Mayans had a strong connection with cenotes, since they were they water source, and were also considered the entrance to the underworld.
  • Jade, copper, gold and even clothing have been found inside, as offerings to the gods.
  • For the Mayans, the duality mountain and water spring had to be represented in their settlement, reason why pyramids exist, as a recreation of the sacred mountain.

Open Cenote : Ik-Kil Cenote

Cenote Ik Kil is a large sinkhole located near Merida on the Yucatan this massive natural swimming pool is draped with vines and tree roots hanging down from the ceiling. It is absolutely stunning to see the sun rays falling on the water and creating a magical sparkle all around; it is truly nothing less than a deep tropical hidden paradise.
